Xiao Long Bao vs. Momo: Similar Shapes, Different Stories
A pleated top, a soft wrapper, and a steaming plate: at first glance, xiao long bao and momo can look like close relatives.
Both belong to rich dumpling traditions. Both reward careful shaping. But the resemblance is only the beginning of the story.
For guests discovering xiao long bao at Sammi & Soupe Dumpling, comparing them with Nepali momo offers a way to understand what makes a soup dumpling distinctive.
How momo are made
Momo are widely enjoyed in Nepal, with variations across Himalayan communities. A typical preparation starts with a flour-and-water wrapper enclosing a seasoned meat or vegetable filling. The dough is folded and sealed, then often steamed. Shapes, fillings, and seasoning vary between kitchens. Nepal Tourism Board’s heritage cookbook includes momo as part of the country’s culinary repertoire. trade.ntb.gov.np
A rounded momo may have gathered pleats at the top, while another may take a crescent shape. Appearance alone does not tell the whole story.
The difference inside the wrapper
A momo can be juicy without being designed to hold a separate pocket of soup.
Classic soup-filled xiao long bao are built around that broth-filled centre. One common method encloses chilled broth jelly with the filling; steaming turns it back into liquid.
The wrapper therefore has a particular job: carrying the filling and retaining the broth until the dumpling reaches your spoon.
What about momo served in soup?
Momo also come in preparations served with sauces or broth, including jhol momo. Soup around a dumpling, however, is different from soup enclosed within its wrapper.
There are many regional and contemporary variations, so neither dish can be reduced to one shape or one recipe. The clearest distinction is the eating experience: with xiao long bao, you gently open the dumpling to discover the broth inside.
If you already enjoy momo, that familiar pleasure of dough and filling gives you a place to begin.
